Local female-founded beauty brands to support this International Women’s Month Local female-founded beauty brands to support this International Women’s Month

March is International Women’s Month. During this time, we celebrate the achievements of women as well as highlight the issues that still need to be overcome to achieve equality. One place that women are dominating is the beauty space. In South Africa, we have many female-founded brands that create effective and exciting skincare, bodycare, haircare and makeup products.

Here are five to support this month (and always!).

Yearn Skin

Noticing (and feeling frustrated by) a lack of diverse and market-specific products, sisters Natasha and Nadia Michael created this brand to address their community’s needs, such as uneven skin tone and dark marks. Their focus is on efficacy, safety and quality – something that they deliver on with their popular skincare collection that is designed with expert formulations to tackle any and every complexion concern.

Lelive

This beauty brand – which has now gone international – was founded by the Swazi-South African model, Amanda Du-Pont. Her aim was to create a collection that wasn’t about being trendy but rather being effective at delivering real results. The range of products combines dermatologist-approved science and the African ingredients of her heritage that have been proven to have potent skin-perfecting properties, including baobab, marula and mongongo.

Pastry Skincare

A qualified Chartered Accountant and former banker, Mathebe Molise realised that Black women spend more on beauty than any other demographic. As such, she wanted to create a brand that addressed the skin issues that are concerning her community. In 2021, Pastry Skincare was launched and they produce innovative products for face and body that target everything from hyperpigmentation to dryness to signs of ageing.

SKIN functional

Established in 2019 by Shannon Dougall, this brand has loads of products in its extensive collection to address any skin concern. Their aim is to reshape the industry’s approach and allow consumers to make informed choices. They are committed to sustainability in the beauty space and emphasize eco-conscious solutions and environmentally-friendly practices without compromising on effective, quality ingredients that do their job.

Standard. Beauty

In June 2020, Ann-Kathrin Joos launched this local, 100% women-owned and operated brand that not only has effective skincare solutions but comes in the *prettiest* packaging. She wanted Standard. to be high-quality, affordable and cute, and it’s safe to say she’s succeeded in her mission! The big range has products for face and body, including serums, moisturisers, scrubs and creams to suit all skin types and treat any concern.
